Job Description
Background
UNDP Gambia is in its fourth year of implementation of its Country Programme Document 2022 – 2025. The Country Programme seeks to support the Government of the Gambia across 3 key strategic areas.


1. Economic Management, Human Capital Development and Poverty Eradication
2. Governance and Human Rights.
3. Environment and resilience Development


The Gambia is at the cusp of transformation despite the multitude of development challenges, notably restoring good governance, stabilizing the economy, empowering youth, and making the private sector the engine of growth, transformation, and job creation. The Gambia is in the process of articulating its next Development Plan that will guide its investments, and to which the United Nations Development Plan will continue align and support. UNDP is and will continue to be a partner in this transformative process.


The UNDP’s 2022-25 Strategic Plan, which provides the overall guidance, is a comprehensive framework to support countries, including The Gambia, on their path towards attaining the SDGs through country programs driven by national development choices. And UNDP Gambia is further guided by the UNDP Africa offer whose overarching goal is to accelerate the attainment of the 2030 SDGs and the African Union’s Agenda 2063. It within this context that the UNDP Gambia focuses on (a) inclusive economic growth and poverty eradication; (b) governance and human rights; and (c) environment and resilience development. These efforts are part of the UN partnership in the Gambia and are in support of the national priorities.


Under the guidance and supervision of the Admin/Procurement Associate, the senior driver provides reliable and safe driving services to UNDP RR and other high-ranking UN officials and visitors ensuring highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Upon request of the supervisor, the Driver can be also required to provide driving services to the operations and programme staff in the CO, Consultants and Experts and UN staff on mission.

Duties and Responsibilities
Summary of Key Functions:
 Provision of reliable and secure driving services
 Proper use of vehicle
 Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle
 Availability of documents/ supplies


1. Provision of reliable and secure driving services;
a. Ensures provision of reliable and safe driving services by a) driving office vehicles for the transport of UNDP RR/UN RC, other high-ranking officials and visitors and delivery and collection of mail, documents and other items, and b) meeting official personnel and visitors at the airport including visa and customs formalities arrangement when required.


2. Proper use of vehicle;
a. Ensures cost-savings through proper use of vehicle through accurate maintenance of daily vehicle logs, provision of inputs to preparation of the vehicle maintenance plans and reports.


3. Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle;

a. Ensures proper day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle through timely minor repairs, arrangements for major repairs, timely changes of oil, check of tires, brakes, car washing, etc.


4. Availability of documents/ supplies;
a. Ensures availability of all the required documents/supplies including vehicle insurance, vehicle logs, office directory, map of the city/country, first aid kit, necessary spare parts in the assigned vehicle.
b. Ensures that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Completion of Secondary Education. Valid Driver’s license.

Experience:
3 years’ work experience as a driver; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair and maintenance
Experience in the basic use of computers and relevant office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc) and ability to use web-based management and electronic log, file and/or scheduling systems.
Knowledge of protocols and security requirements is an advantage.
Please note that continuance of appointment beyond the initial 12 months is contingent upon the successful completion of a probationary period.
